NOTICE TO WENTWORTH TAXPAYERS

We understand that many residents are concerned and frustrated by the significant increase in our 
town’s tax rate this year. The new rate has been set at $28.54, up from $22.20 last year. We want 
to take a moment to explain what led to this change and assure you that your town officials are 
working diligently to manage costs and plan responsibly for the future.

Last year’s tax rate was originally calculated at $25.21, but was reduced to $22.20 through the 
application of $115,000 from our unassigned fund balance. Unfortunately, this year, we did not have 
the same flexibility to offset the rate in that way.

Our revenues were down by $87,000, and our total appropriations were up by $337,000. The largest 
factor behind this increase was funding for the Warren–Wentworth Ambulance Service, which is now 
defunct. While this situation created financial strain, we are pleased to share that under Brian 
Dubois’ leadership, the Town has developed a new Plan B for ambulance services that will maintain 
excellent emergency response at a substantially lower cost going forward.

It’s important to note that the school budget accounts for approximately 65% of our overall tax 
dollars. Rick Ducheneau is working closely with the school board to explore ways to reduce costs 
and improve long-term sustainability in this area.

Looking ahead, each of our department heads — Fire, Police, Highway, Transfer Station, and Library 
— will soon present their proposed budgets to the Select Board for initial review. A formal public 
budget hearing will be held in December, and we encourage residents to attend, ask questions, and 
share input.

We know this increase places a burden on many of our residents, and we share in your concern. 
Please know that your town officials are committed to transparency, accountability, and teamwork as 
we move forward. Together, we will continue to strengthen our community and ensure that every tax 
dollar is used wisely and responsibly.
